CAN WE TALK?

To determine for Dow USA's Plaquemine, Louisiana, facility what issues are of most concern to nearby communities, how those communities keep up with and communicate about those issues and what Dow can do to improve its communications techniques and effectiveness. Dow wanted to identify the key methods and persons that define the area's "communications network."
The strategy employed a series of focus groups and a telephone survey in a two-parish area surrounding the plant. Community influentials were identified, invited to focus groups and asked to discuss local issues and communications methods and networks. A follow-up poll was conducted to validate and add detail to focus group findings.

The study produced solid evidence of both formal and informal communications networks in the communities near the plant. It was discovered that certain persons and organizations in traditional and non-traditional communications networks play a significant role in shaping community issues and perceptions. These individuals and organizations were documented in an extensive, automated data base for future reference. The results acquired are now being used to guide and implement Dow's community outreach program.
